Baptists in Sacred Space? Worship, Buildings, and Belonging

An exploration, with particular reference to one Yorkshire chapel and families associated it, of Baptists’ need for buildings fit their worship, fellowship, polity. The first section introduces theme, builders, architects, benefactors, noting James Cubitt Thomas Harwood Pattison, men sensitive aesthetics. second outlines the development Wainsgate. third is about ‘belonging’. Family connections are explored, including Mitchells Fawcetts who provide focus fourth fifth sections: John Fawcett, Wainsgate's minister, great-grandson William Mitchell barrister, friend T.H. contributing him Religious Republics (1869), considered in final section. Fawcett's contribution, might be seen as an essay on belonging. What he analysed 1869 remains relevant explains Wainsgate, unique yet representative.
